Herceg Novi is a coastal city in Montenegro, located at the entrance to Kotor Bay, at the foot of Mount Orjen. It is the administrative center of the commune of the same name, which has around 33,000 inhabitants.
Set on a steep hill at the mouth of the Kotor Bay, Herceg Novi was, at times, the favorite tourist destination for the bourgeois of Vienna in the 19th century. The streets attest to the era of elegance they once lived. Even though it is not as rich in history as Kotor nor does it have the energy of the city of Budva, Herceg Novi is attractive enough to keep you busy for a few days. It is a short trip by boat from the Lustica peninsula, with its beaches and bays, while the nearby Orjen Mountains offer some tourist routes. The proximity of the border with Croatia makes possible a trip to Dubrovnik, just 50 kilometers away.
Herceg Novi is the host of two important events, the Praznik Mimoze Festival in February, celebrating the arrival of spring through a range of cultural, sporting and film festivals, as well as the Filmski Festival, which presents short footage and local films and films. national in the scenic scenery of Kanli Kula, above the old city.
The beautiful old center of the city hosts some points of interest, while to the north is the Spanish Fortress, and to the east is the Savina Monastery.
The old City
Perhaps the best place to start your visit in Herceg Novi is the main market, Trg Nikole Dukovica, east of the entrance to the old town, descending to the beach. The clock tower (Sahat Kula), built in 1850, is Trg Herceg Stijepan. Surrounded by two tall palm trees, the church of Saint Archangel Michael (Crkva Sv Mihail Arhandela) is located. Although it is only a century old, the white-yellow building of the church looks much older. The high dome is the most impressive feature of the church, the interior being dominated by the white marble of the altar, modeled with floral motifs and a series of old icons. Immediately next to the church is the Karaca fountain, a lovely stone structure, from which water springs.
The northern and southern ends of the old city are bordered by robust fortifications, the remains of the defensive walls of the city. To the north, climbing a series of steps, you reach Kanli Kula (Sangeros Tower), a construction that served as a prison during the Ottoman occupation. Today, it is used to host theatrical performances and as a viewing platform for the entire city and the Lustica peninsula. Starting from the southern section of the market, there is a Vojnevica Margin, a narrow street, bordered by tall buildings, which leads to Forte Mare (Fortress of the Sea), a fortification less imposing than Kanli Kula, but which had the same discouraging role for the invaders, over time.
Along the Petal Setalist Danica
Unlike the appearance it has today, between 1936 and 1967 the promenade functioned as a railway line, highlighted today by the presence of the beautiful building of the former train station, on the opposite side of the marina, today a small hotel. . The city does not have sandy beaches, the coast being made up of several concrete platforms, interrupted, from place to place, by rocky bays, which hide small portions of gravel beaches.
About 1 km away from the marina, there are several signs pointing to the city museum (Muzej Grad), on Mirka Komnenovica no. 9, which mainly presents vestiges of the water history of the city of Herceg Novi, with paintings, equipment and aquatic costumes, but also has an extraordinary collection of icons, which is worth seeing. A short distance from the museum on Njegoseva Street, is the memorial house of Ivo Andric, one of the most appreciated writers of the ex-Yugoslav space, born in Bosnia and awarded a Nobel Prize in 1961 for his work, "Bridge over Drina". The house is now a gray restaurant, but some of his books, as well as photographs of the author, can be seen in an upstairs room.
Spanish Fort
At the height, above the city, is the 16th-century Spanish fort, Tvrdava Spanjola, named after the Spaniards who occupied for a short time the city in 1538, even though the structure was completed by the Turks, a little later. Today, its thick walls and round bastions crumble a few graffiti-strewn ruins, damaged by the powerful earthquake of 1979.
Savina Monastery
A 20-minute walk to the east of the city, along Sava Kovacevica and Brace Grakalic, will take you to the wooded hill where Savina Monastery is. Founded in the seventeenth century by the refugee monks from Trebinje (today in Bosnia and Herzegovina), the monastery has annexed two churches, both dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin. The largest of them is a cheerful building, which combines Baroque and Byzantine style, built from white stone blocks brought from the Croatian island of Korcula.
The Blue Cave
It is one of the most attractive of the cave series located on the Lustic Peninsula. The blue cave is located between the bay of Zlatna Luka and Cape Mokra Gora, at a distance of 5.7 nautical miles (16 km) from Herceg Novi, in the waters of the Adriatic.
